The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadris, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and biodiversity hotspot, home to various butterfly and moth species.
Around 334 butterfly species are found in the Western Ghats, with 215 species present in Maharashtra.
Parpoli village in Maharashtra, near Kesari village (home to KSR Global Aquarium), is known as the “Butterfly Village of India.”

Camouflage and Defense: Moths in the Western Ghats have adapted unique camouflage techniques and wing patterns to blend with their surroundings, protecting them from pred
Ecological Indicators: Moths are sensitive to environmental changes, making them essential indicators of ecosystem health in the Western Ghats.
Butterflies and moths both face predators like birds, lizards, frogs, spiders, and praying mantises, which hunt visually.
Some butterflies and moths have evolved to become unpalatable, which helps them deter predators and survive in diverse habitats of the Western Ghats.
